Oscar Predictions 2019

When I was a little girl, watching the Oscars at home with my mom was one of the highlights of the year. We’d make popcorn on the stove while the red carpet special aired and I’d prepare myself for a glimpse at my celebrity crushes (mostly, Elijah Wood and Leo DiCaprio). Once the show got started, my favorite moments were undoubtedly the opening acts and award speeches. Even at age 8, I couldn’t help but tear up as best actors and actresses cried.  I knew there was something very important about the night; not just for Hollywood but what it conveyed about American culture on the whole. As an adult, my expectations have shifted in regards to the Oscars. There has been a plethora of online criticism direct towards the Academy, mainly, their disregard for minority filmmakers and talent. This year, the awards show has shaped up with more inclusion (Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Roma) but failing in other areas (i.e. the exclusion of women in Best Director category, or some awards like  best cinematography and best editing will be moved to commercial breaks).  Needless to say, this is bound to be a historical year.
